Exploring the Metropolis is a New York City-based non-profit providing workspace solutions for NYC’s Performing Arts Communities. EtM focuses on the built environment and helps two NYC cultural communities: (1) Performing artists/companies seeking affordable, suitable workspace to rehearse and perform, and (2) Cultural facilities with underused space and the need to activate them.
The organization accomplishes these goals by:

  • Creating NYC Performing Arts Spaces, the free database website, started in 2001 and now operated by Fractured Atlas.
  • Engaging with cultural communities and facilities through studies of their physical facility needs, operating structures, etc.
  • Working for and with government by supplying neutral data and resources based on specialized experience.
  • Providing opportunities for musicians and performing artists through our residency programs.

Exploring the Metropolis is happy to announce the next round of the 2011 Con Edison Musicians’ Residency: Composition Program.  Stemming from their 2008 study, “Where Can We Work?”, the residency provides free space in cultural and community facilities for composition work. This year, EtM will select eight NYC-based composers for residence in four facilities.  Composers receive three months of free workspace and a $1,000 stipend.  All composers must complete one public program in cooperation with the host facility.  Applications and Guidelines are currently available online and the application deadline is June 1, 2011.
