Orchestras spend a lot to rent music, but there seems to be very little accountability from some of the companies that rent it out. Librarians have been putting the topic of illegible and deteriorating rental parts on their agendas at every meeting, and yet we still are faced with this problem. With the fabulous music software available, there is no excuse for bad parts any more. What can orchestras do to demand readable and accurate parts? After all, this wastes untold hours of practice and rehearsal time, and can have an impact on the quality of our performances if misread notes are not caught in the limited rehearsal time we often have. Can managements withhold rental fees if the parts are unsatisfactory?
